Social, health and organisational challenges are driven by people's behaviours
Data often shows us what the problem is, but not necessarily WHY it is happening or what the real influencers affecting the problem are. Data science can tell us WHAT is happening and if combined with rich ethnography – we are able to gain a clear understanding of human behaviour to explain why it is happening.

Complex challenges and wicked problems require an on-the-ground, deeper understanding of the range of factors that are at the heart of the problem. For instance, poor uptake of support services, lifestyle behaviours that are making people ill, incorrect or overuse of services are all problems driven by human behaviours alongside wider environmental and economic systemic factors.
Changing behaviours through design
The ways in which we work with people helps us to listen and observe closely to better understand them and their behaviours. It is often in the seeing what they do, not just the listening to what they say, when clarity is achieved. Uncovering the data needed to confirm or deny a ‘hunch’ or assumption, gives insight to complex challenges and provides fresh perspectives on age old problems. Design focused research doesn’t just uncover findings but also looks for opportunities along the way. Designing appropriate ways to engage with different people to uncover depth and truth (what works to understand one of your senior leadership will not be the same as what works to engage your under represented users.) A human centred approach seeks to understand people’s behaviours and motivations and ensure uptake and embedding change.

Minimising disruption, inefficiencies and risks. Design-thinking works across the multiple disciplines of research, design and implementation to join up the process, feeding into actionable insights and improvements. Being able to truly understand the issues and challenges inside out, feeds into strategy and decision making, ensuring effective use of resources and funds.
